What a $59 Service Call Actually Buys You
Berne Appliance Repair charges $59 for a service call in South Florida. If you approve the repair, the $59 is waived, and the labor is covered by a 90-day warranty. I am Eugene Bernitsky, the founder. I set that policy in 2022, when the company was two technicians and about 35 jobs a month. It is still the policy now that we run three brands, 19 to 20 technicians, and around 7,500 jobs a year. People ask me about it more than about anything else we do, usually in one of two forms: "why do you charge at all?" and "why so little?" Both are fair questions. Here is the reasoning.
The fee pays for a diagnosis, not a visit
A technician arriving at your door is the cheap part. What you are paying for is the twenty to forty minutes that follow: pulling the machine out, reading the error history, testing the component everyone on the internet said was broken and finding out it was a different one. My first job in America was a refrigerator in Sunny Isles Beach that took me three hours to diagnose. A good tech does it in half an hour, and that half hour is the product. The $59 is the price of a professional opinion you can act on.
It also buys you a written number. Before any work starts, you get the exact cost of the repair, parts and labor, and you decide. Nothing is taken apart on speculation.
Why it disappears when you say yes
If you approve the repair, the $59 goes away. That is not generosity. It is the honest way to price a diagnosis. The visit was the start of a job, and the job is what we bill. Charging for the diagnosis on top of the repair is charging twice for the same hour.
The other reason is incentive. When the fee is waived on approval, the technician has no reason to pad a diagnosis. He gets paid on the repair, the customer pays once, and nobody argues about whether the trip charge was "worth it."
Why not free
"Free estimate" companies exist in every market, and I understand the pull. But nobody drives a van across Broward for free. The cost is recovered somewhere, usually in the repair price, sometimes in a repair you did not need. A small, stated fee keeps both sides honest. You know the price of our time before we come. We know you are serious enough to pay for an opinion.
Why $59 and not $129
Volume. At 7,500 jobs a year our technicians work in tight zones, so the drive to you is short and cheap. A company doing 500 jobs a year with two trucks has to charge more per visit just to cover fuel and idle hours. Our diagnostic fee is low because our dispatch is dense, and it stays low because the number of jobs keeps the trucks close to the next customer.
What the 90 days mean
Every repair carries a 90-day warranty on labor. If the same fault comes back within 90 days, we come back and fix it without a second call fee. This is where the trust part of pricing lives. A low fee with no warranty is a coupon. A low fee with a warranty is a promise that the technician expects the fix to hold, because if it does not, we eat the second trip.
It also shapes hiring and training. A technician whose callbacks cost the company money is coached differently from one whose callbacks generate a second invoice. Ours are coached to finish the job.
What the fee does not cover
Parts. Every quote lists them. Some machines are not worth fixing, and if the repair would cost more than the appliance is worth, the technician will say so. Then you are out $59 and you have a clear answer. That is the right outcome. You paid for a diagnosis and you got one.
A note for anyone starting a service company
Set your fee in public, make it small enough that a stranger will pay it, and attach a warranty you can actually keep. Then measure callbacks. Everything I know about trust in home services fits in those two numbers: what you charge to show up, and how often you have to come back.
